A compilation from many top-selling Naxos discs of sacred music, including the incredibly beautiful performance by Lisa Beckley of the Pie Jesu from Fauré's Requiem. The disc takes us from Handel's devotional Ombra mai fù, to the more operatic Ave Maria by Donizetti. Indeed something for all tastes, including the 'pop' aria of its time, Giordani's Caro mio ben, and recently elevated to 'pop' status, Panis angelicus by César Franck. There are also a number of new recordings, including the wonderful voice of the tenor, József Mukk, and the delectable soprano, Ingrid Kertesi, who can be heard in Schubert's deeply moving, Ave Maria. Handel and Bach are well represented, when Bach's Cantata 147 was first issued the Gramophone described it as confidently recommended.
