The emergence of Bob Dylan in the few years previous to 1965 sent shockwaves through the UK folk scene with his impact immediate and felt far and wide but by 1965 UK folkies were developing their own thing. There were those that looked back to the folk tradition but brought it up to date so as to be more in line with contemporary tastes, such as The Ian Campbell Folk Group, Shirley Collins, Dominic Behan, The Dubliners, Martin Carthy, and The Watersons, among others. By this time pop music had also succumbed to the folk influence as can be evidenced by singles released by the likes of Donovan, The Seekers, Chad And Jeremy, Unit Four Plus Two, Peter And Gordon, and many others. 1965 was also the year when female folk singers came to the fore in the UK with Julie Felix becoming massively popular. Crowned "Britain's First Lady of Folk", Felix became the first folk artist to sell out the Albert Hall and also become the first pop artist to perform at Westminster Abbey. Marianne Faithfull released folk material in May 1965 and Vashti Bunyan's debut single also arrived that month. That year we also saw key releases by artists whose work would provide the bridge from folk to rock. Davy Graham was a brilliant guitarist who fused traditional folk music with a variety of wide-ranging influences, creating something new and vital. Bert Jansch was another trailblazing guitar-player whose idiosyncratic style was absorbed by many that followed. Both artists' work would be massively influential on the likes of The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and many others. Although the UK was making its own way there was still some US involvement as can be evidenced by visiting artists who recorded here, such as Paul Simon, Jackson C. Frank, and Jesse Fuller. There are also plenty of covers of US songs included here with the likes of Dorris Henderson, Dave Helling, The Malcolm Price Trio, Patrick Small, Dedicated Man's Jugband, and more, all sourcing material from America.
