William Schwenk Gilbert (1836-1911) and Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900)Princess Ida, or 'Castle Adamant'The three-act comic opera Princess Ida appeared, chronologically, between Iolanthe (1882) and TheMikado (1885) and was first performed under the batonof the composer, on 5th January 1884 at the'electrically-lighted' Savoy Theatre. Its initialproduction ran for 246 performances (with a firstAmerican production opening in parallel at New York'sFifth Avenue Theatre, on 11th February). Billed a'respectful Operatic Per-Version of Tennyson's\\Princess ', it was a re-working by Gilbert of his ownunsuccessful 1870 burlesque The Princess, itself a satireof Tennyson's narrative poem, but whereas in ThePrincess: A Medley (1847; augmented in 1853) the PoetLaureate had eagerly anticipated female emancipation,in Princess Ida the conservative Gilbert reaffirmed hisown more sceptical view of the feminist movement, astance which, after the establishment during the 1870sof women's colleges at Oxford and Cambridge, wasalready becoming unfashionable.Peter Dempsey''

Overture

Death to the invader!

Search throughout the panorama

I Built Upon a Rock

Now hearken to my strict command

Whene'er I spoke

Today we meet, My baby bride and I

When anger spreads his song

From the distant panorama - We are warriors three

This helmet, I suppose

If You Give Me Your Attention

This is our duty plain

P'raps if you address the lady

Finale

Come, Cyril, Florian - Expressive glances

For the Merriest Fellows are We

Must we, till then, in prison cell be thrust? - For a month to dwell in a dungeon cell

Buon giorno, signorine

Towards the empyrean heights

From the Sunny Spanish Shore

Mighty maiden with a mission

In Enterprise of Martial Kind

Minerva! Hear me - Oh, goddess wise

There Was a Time

Gently, gently, evidently

I Stole the Prince

They intend to send a wire

Recit: But bless my heart - Try we lifelong

I am a maiden, cold and stately

Bridegroom and Bride

The world is but a broken toy

When a Merry Maiden Marries

A lady fair (The Ape and the Lady)

Then One of Us Will Be a Queen

The women of the wisest wit

Rising Early in the Morning

Now wouldn't you like to rule the roost

Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes

Merrily ring the luncheon bell

There Lived a King

Would you know the kind of maid

I am a courtier, grave and serious

Finale

Here we are, at risk of our lives

Dance a cachucha
