Description
In this powerful and poignant novel, set against the tumultuous backdrop of 1950s and '60s Romania, Andrea Tompa masterfully explores the daily hardships and humiliations of displaced Hungarians. The narrative unfolds in southern Transylvania, a region annexed by Romania from Hungary, and delves into the indomitable human spirit against the complex history of the region. Through a rich, layered narrative, Tompa evokes the fate of those who live under similar circumstances today, and poignantly illustrates the self-censorship and surrendered opportunities imposed by a regime. The title itself, "Omertà," refers to a code of silence, a fitting summary of the themes that run throughout this thought-provoking novel. A deeply human and thought-provoking exploration of resilience in the face of oppression, "Omertà" is a must-read for anyone interested in historical fiction, literary fiction, or the human experience.
