A sumptuous reissue of Andrew Parrott's and his Taverner Choir & Players seminal recording of Purcell's Dido & Aeneas features pristine solo turns by baritone Ben Parry as Aeneas, the Trojan king, and soprano Emily Van Evera as Dido, the abandoned Queen of Carthage.\r

Avie continues to mine the rich catalogue of recordings made by Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Choir & Players. The performance is as fresh as when the recording was made in 1994, with baritone Ben Parry as the Trojan hero Aeneas, and soprano Emily Van Evera as the abandoned Queen of Carthage, delivering an interpretation of Dido's Lament that is as dignified as it is sublime.

Critical acclaim for Andrew Parrott's and the Taverner Consort's Dido & Aeneas:

\r

'Places the accent on giving meaning and colour to every word of the text...Parrott directs the excellent Taverner Players in a performance that charms as well as moves in abundance.' - BBC Music Magazine, * * * * * / * * * * *

\r

'For all the performances available out there, the listener could not do better than this vividly dramatic reading...as Dido, Emily Van Evera is the standout. Her death scene is a marvel of...expiring passion.' - Newark Star Ledger

Dido and Aeneas, Overture

ACT I \xb7 Scene: The Palace, Shake the cloud from off your brow

Ah! Belinda, I am pressed with torment

Grief increases by concealing

When monarchs unite, how happy their state

Whence could so much virtue spring?

Fear no danger to ensue

Dance [Fear no danger to ensue]

See, see, your royal guest appears

Cupid only throws the dart

If not for mine, for empire's sake

Pursue thy conquest, Love

Dance: 'Gittars Chacony'

To the hills and the vales

The Triumphing Dance

ACT II \xb7 Scene: The Cave, Prelude for the Witches ?Wayward sisters, you that fright

Harm's our delight

The Queen of Carthage, whom we hate

Ho ho ho!

Ruined ere the set of sun?

Ho ho ho!

But ere we this perform

In our deep vaulted cell

Echo Dance of Furies

Ritornelle

Thanks to these lonesome vales

Dance: 'Gitter Ground'; Oft she visits this lone mountain; A Dance to entertain Aeneas by Dido's women

Behold, upon my bending spear

Haste, haste to town!

Stay, Prince, and hear great Jove's command

[Dance: Hornpipe from The Married Beau] ?

ACT III \xb7 Scene: The Ships, Prelude - Come away, fellow sailors

The Sailors' Dance

See the flags and streamers curling

Our next motion

Destruction our delight

The Witches' Dance

Your counsel all is urg'd in vain

Great minds against themselves conspire

Thy hand, Belinda; darkness shades me

When I am laid in earth

With drooping wings

Cupids' Dance

Pavan in G minor z752 for three violins and continuo
