Miles Ahead was Miles Davis' first recording with the Gil Evans Orchestra and which opened the way for many more collaborations between the two. Presented here in its entirety, it also includes the five 1962 orchestral tracks from Miles and Gil's last studio collaboration, Quiet Nights.

Also included are three tracks from a 1961 Carnegie Hall concert, which was their only live recording together and which included three compositions from Miles Ahead, as well as an arrangement of Spring Is Here, which never made it into any of the Miles Davis-Gil Evans studio albums. As an appropriate closing track, Miles' 1953 original quartet version of Miles Ahead is also included.
