Description
This thought-provoking book critically examines the assumptions and practices of global mental health initiatives, emphasizing the importance of cultural variability and local resources. Featuring contributions from prominent anthropologists, public health experts, and psychiatrists, it argues against the universality of psychiatric diagnoses and treatments. By exploring the complexities of mental health in South and Southeast Asia, this volume offers a nuanced perspective on the global movement for mental health. The book delves into the genealogies of this movement, its visions, and its implications for the field of global mental health. With a focus on the region's unique cultural and social contexts, this work provides a valuable critique of the dominant narratives in global mental health.
