Description
This book delves into the complex and often taboo topics of childhood, sexuality, and violence in early medieval society. Through a close examination of penitentials – small books of penance composed between the 6th and 9th centuries – it reveals the church's efforts to regulate and understand human behavior. By analyzing the social context of these penitentials, the author sheds light on how medieval authors and their audiences viewed and addressed issues of sin and morality. This work challenges readers to consider the intersections of power, morality, and human experience in a society where the boundaries between childhood, sexuality, and violence were often blurred. By exploring the intricacies of medieval thought on these subjects, this book provides a nuanced understanding of the evolution of human values and societal norms.
