Description
This groundbreaking collection brings together esteemed scholars to explore the complex intersections of faith, performance, and identity in the Puritan Atlantic. Through a nuanced examination of texts, rituals, and practices, the contributors reveal the intricate ways in which Puritanism shaped the lives of early modern people, particularly African Americans and Native Americans. By analyzing the performance of faith, the authors shed light on the power dynamics and social hierarchies of the time, highlighting the tensions between colonialism, slavery, and the construction of racial and ethnic identity. The essays in this volume delve into the ways in which Puritanism was performed, practiced, and contested in the 17th and 18th centuries, offering a rich and multifaceted understanding of the era. This thought-provoking collection is a must-read for scholars of early American history, American studies, and cultural studies. With its interdisciplinary approach, it challenges readers to rethink the ways in which faith, power, and identity intersect.
