Here is DUKE ELLINGTON, the war patriot, selling war bonds towards the end of WWII (Spring and Fall of 1945) by presenting his orchestra via three live radio broadcasts - from a hospital centre in Michigan, the Paramount Theatre in Toledo, Ohio, and the New Zanzibar Club in New York City. While most of the 51 tunes performed here on this great 2CD set are Ellington standards, there are also several rarelyperformed / recorded numbers such as Court Session and Solid Old Man. The playing, typically, is solid throughout and features the talents of JOHNNY HODGES, REX STEWART, HARRY CARNEY, LAWRENCE BROWN, JOYA SHERRILL, BILLY STRAYHORN,OSCAR PETTIFORD and SONNY GREER, amongst others.
