Set for a July 5th release on Vertigo Records, \u2018Vulture Culture\u2019, was recorded during an isolated, month long stint at Giant Wafer Studios in Wales with producer duo Alex Loring & Tom Andrews, that tested and toyed with the band. \u201cWe always work best in isolation,\u201d says drummer Dara Coleman. \u201cI jokingly went into it saying \u2018I\u2019m willing to lose my mind for this album\u2019. Around day twenty, things started getting weird - I started getting paranoid that everyone in the house hated me.\u201d\r

\u201cThere was a real atmosphere of obsession from everybody,\u201d adds Vocalist/Guitarist Steven King. \u201cIt\u2019s the craziest thing I\u2019ve ever done. The theme of the album became violent, there\u2019s a lot of violence in the tone of it, towards yourself and other things.\u201d \r

Steven forced himself to write his lyrics at the last minute, to ensure they were as raw and honest as possible. \u201cIt comes off as a heavier record because I didn\u2019t have time to hide the real stories. It really captured something. The pressure added to it, like \u2018that line\u2019s pretty revealing but I have to put it down, I don\u2019t have anything else\u2019. We could\u2019ve gone in and made another debut, this punk thing with loads of hooks, or I could back myself into a corner. It\u2019s a strangely revealing and personal album but I don\u2019t feel afraid to share it because it\u2019s almost as if I\u2019ve expelled the things.\u201d\r

Woven into \u2018Vulture Culture\u2019s broader sweep - obsessive love songs (\u2018Kingdumb\u2019), and commentary on the carrion concerns and internalised violence of the new generation (\u2018Viva Violent\u2019: \u201cpeople are so violent to themselves, the way they talk to themselves, they\u2019re living a life of violence inside, mirroring the reality of what it\u2019s like outside,\u201d Steven says) - are some of the most revealing confessionals in recent rock memory. From the epic, slow-burning opener \u2018Last Time\u2019 (which is made up of extracts from a confessional note that Steven wrote his girlfriend, which he sang to her in a lamplit studio) to \u2018Heavy Handed\u2019 and \u2018All I Have\u2019 which confront the mental health & substance problems that have tormented Steven and close loved ones, the album ebbs and flows with a common narrative. Tracks like \u2018Slow\u2019, \u2018Nightmare\u2019 and prowling first single \u2018Hesitations\u2019 - featuring a children\u2019s choir - hint at suicidal thoughts, addiction and intense paranoia. \u201cI was completely erratic,\u201d Steven says of his darkest moments, \u201cI was paranoid I was being followed. I had this doomlike feeling every day that something was coming to get me.\u201d \r

In summing up \u2018Vulture Culture\u2019 , Steven says \u201cWe are so proud of this record. It\u2019s a culmination of a lot of chaos and inner mental violence which almost capsized the band. Making this record got us through the fog and we have a new lease of life. The energy is real, the chaos makes sense and the violence is fuel for the fire.\u201d\r
