Steve Logan’s sixth album, Psych Ward, is a meditation on cultural melancholia. It flies above the feeling, increasingly common since Eliot’s The Waste Land that the world is having a break-down. The ten songs, partly recorded at Rockfield Studios, are deeply personal yet touch on many of the big cultural issues of our times: the cult of celebrity (‘Rock Star Slideshow’), compassion fatigue (‘Empathy Baby), Trump and far-right populism (‘Jesus is My Vaccine’). There is a catchy melodic pop tribute to one of Steve’s heroes, ‘Orwell’ and a song underpinned by aching guitar solos, on the yearning for happiness (‘The Sky Inside Your Mind’). Produced by James Hargreaves and mastered by Nick Brine, Psych Ward features the power-house drumming of Nigel Elliot alongside Steve’s soaring vocals and high-energy guitar-work. Steve has been described by critics as ‘a preacher of the fantastic with the soul of a poet’. The range of the album is suggested by the fact that it will appeal equally to fans of Neil Young and The Manic Street Preachers.
