This EM Records release contains all three of Lauridsen's vocal cycles: \u003ci\u003eA Backyard Universe\u003c\/i\u003e (three songs setting poems by Harold Witt), \u003ci\u003eA Winter Come\u003c\/i\u003e (six songs setting poems by Howard Moss) and \u003ci\u003eCuatro Canciones\u003c\/i\u003e (poetry by Federico Garcia Lorca); the solo-voice versions of \u003ci\u003eO Magnum Mysterium\u003c\/i\u003e and the cabaret song alongside the mixed-duet versions of \u003ci\u003eYa Eras Mia\u003c\/i\u003e (\u003ci\u003eNow You Are Mine\u003c\/i\u003ebyPablo Neruda), \u003ci\u003eDirait-on\u003c\/i\u003e (\u003ci\u003eSo They Say\u003c\/i\u003eby Rainer Maria Rilke) and S\u003ci\u003eure On This Shining Night\u003c\/i\u003e (James Agee), as well as the setting that lends its name to the disc's title: \u003ci\u003ePrayer\u003c\/i\u003e (Dana Gioia). Lauridsen has a special fondness for composing for mixed duet and piano, being drawn as he is to the intimacy and expressiveness of the genre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe disc was recorded in Wales, the artists being joined by Lauridsen for the entire sessions, and is a gorgeously performed recital of intensely heartfelt music by a remarkable composer.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMorten Lauridsen said 'I am overjoyed with the release by the distinguished label EM Records of these recordings of my solo songs and mixed duets.
