Indeed, it is arguable that these works define his pianistic output in the same way that the Mazurka defines Chopin's. Publishing them in sets of six, Mendelssohn composed Lieder ohne Worte throughout his career - they proved a type of composition to which he had a lifetime attraction. For the first volume, rather than approaching them chronologically or as complete sets, Peter Donohoe selected pieces to build a satisfying programme. Here he does the same with all the pieces that remain. In addition, the album features three free-standing significant works. The 17 Variations serieuses, from 1841, is one of Mendelssohn's largest solo piano works, and was published in an album to raise funds for a monument to Beethoven. The Phantasie on 'The Last Rose of Summer' is a much earlier work, based on the Irish folk melody that - with added words by the Irish poet Thomas Moore - took Europe by storm in the early 1800s. The album concludes with Rachmaninoff's piano transcription of the Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream.17 Variations S\\xe9rieuse, Op.54, MWVU 156 (1841)
Lieder Ohne Worte
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.38, No.3, MWVU 107 (1835)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.38, No.4, MWVU 120 (1836)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.19b, No.5, MWVU 90 (1830)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.30, No.5, MWVU 97 (1833)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.53, No.6, MWVU 154 (1841)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.30, No.6, MWVU 110 'Venetianisches Gondellied'
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.102, No.5, MWVU 194 'Kinderst\\xfcck' (1845)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.4, MWVU 190 (1845)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.102, No.4, MWVU 152 (1841)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.6, MWVU 155 (1841)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.53, No.1, MWVU 143 (1839)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.30, No.2, MWVU 77 (1830)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.30, No.1, MWVU 103 (1830)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.53, No.3, MWVU 144 'Gondellied' (1839)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.3, MWVU 111 (1835)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.19b, No.6, MWVU 78 'Venetianisches Gondellied' (1830)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.38, No.1, MWVU 121 (1837)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.62, No.2, MWVU 181 (1843)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.1, MWVU 150 (1834)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.102, No.3, MWVU 195 'Kinderst\\xfcck' (1845)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.2, MWVU 101 (1834)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.85, No.5, MWVU 191 (1845)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.38, No.5, MWVU 137 (1837)
Lied Ohne Worte, Op.67, No.6, MWVU 188 (1841)
Phantasie, Op.15, MWVU 74 (1827)
Scherzo From 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', Op.61, MWVM 13 (1842)
