This was the soundtrack to the herbfragranced, alternative lifestyle that wound its way around country lanes looking for a place to set up \u0026amp; party, away from the psychoses of corporate life. \u003c\/p\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003e Without any desire or need for a record label, it was the Ozric Tentacles' cassette releases that funded \u0026amp; supported their journey through the \\u201880\\u2019s. These simple artefacts with photocopied inserts \u0026amp; rainbow spray-painted labels were sold in vast quantities at festivals, on the merchandise table at Club Dog \u0026amp; through a mail order outlet. \u003c\/p\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003e With the rapid word of mouth success of \\u2018Erpsongs\\u2019 \u0026amp; \\u2018Tantric Obstacles\\u2019 in 1985, the growing ranks of Ozrics fans were demanding more music. Ed Wynne was regularly handing out compilations of live recordings \u0026amp; studio outtakes to fans who wanted to send him a blank cassette in the mail. The solution to the overwhelming number of requests was a compilation of live recordings under the title \\u2018Live Ethereal Cereal\\u2019 which first appeared in \\u201986. It is immediately apparent that the band was a much heavier proposition in a live environment. The opening cut \\u2018Erpriff\\u2019 displays just how strong they could be with a full drum kit. The recordings perfectly capture the atmosphere of those early anarchic tours. \u003c\/p\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\\r\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003e \\u2018Erpriff\\u2019 \u0026amp; \\u2018Tentacular Explosion\\u2019 are powerhouses of crackling improvisational energy. \\u2018Obstacular Explosion\\u2019 sounds like Santana in places, with Ed improvising solos over a backbeat of conga fuelled percussion whilst at other moments, the band pull back for some lazy dub sounds as heard on \\u2018Stupid Reggae\\u2019. A nod to Gong \u0026amp; Steve Hillage can be found in the form of \\u2018Aumriff\\u2019 (\\u2018Om Riff\\u2019), which is about as close as The Ozrics would ever come again to a cover version.
